John Crawford was NOT carrying a TOY rifle when he was shot at Walmart    [L]

I keep seeing people expressing outrage that Crawford was shot because he was carrying a TOY gun through Walmart.

Uh, NO.

THIS IS NOT A TOY. THIS RIFLE* SHOOTS REAL METAL PROJECTILES.

THERE IS NO ORANGE TIP BECAUSE IT IS NOT CONSIDERED A TOY.

Despite that these projectiles are smaller and slower than usual does not mean it can't hurt somebody.

From the owner's manual:
NOT A TOY. THIS AIRGUN IS RECOMMENDED FOR ADULT USE ONLY. MISUSE OR CARELESS USE MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. DANGEROUS WITHIN 550 YARDS(503 METERS)

THIS LOOKS LIKE A REAL MILITARY RIFLE (google FN-SCAR).

Again from the owner's manual:
Do not brandish or display this air rifle in public – it may confuse people and may be a crime. Police and others may think it is a firearm

From the eyewitness who made the 911 call:
Ritchie, an ex-Marine, said the man was pointing a black rifle at people near the pet section and that “he’s loading it right now.” Later, he said, “He looked like he was trying to load it, I don’t know.” He then added, “He just pointed it at two children.”

The Ritchies said the man with the rifle fell backwards when he was struck by the gunshots. But, he got back up and went towards the officer who shot him. That officer then tackled the man with the rifle to the ground.

“He looked like he was going to go violently,” Ronald Ritchie said. “If he would have dropped the weapon, he could have came out with his life. But, unfortunately, he didn’t.”

So a guy is acting erratically, loading then pointing what appears to be a military rifle at children.

I don't care what skin color he has, that's not appropriate EVER.

So yeah, given what is currently the official story**, it certainly sounds like the police were justified in their actions. I feel sorry for his kids, but John Crawford seems to have nominated himself for a Darwin award.

As an aside, if this does end up being justified police action (and thus eliminating any chance of a lawsuit), I fully expect them to go after Crosman for "deliberately marketing a lethal rifle as a children's toy" or some bullcrap like that.

* DDN reported the rifle as a Crosman MK-177 on 8/7/14
** and I never trust the official story, especially early on. Hopefully everything was captured by Walmart's security cameras and will come to light quickly and decisively.
