The data should be as recent as possible, and be yearly data.
What I'm looking for:
1) gas company profit per gallon (any specific company, or industry-wide is fine)
2) average taxes per gallon (average combined federal/state/local for the nation)
3) volume of gasoline sold in a year (in millions of gallons)
4) [optional] amount of profit not from gasoline sales (ie convenience store purchases)
5) [optional] adjusted cost of gas for the last few years, as well as the adjusted cost of other petroleum products (such as plastics, crayons, etc.)
What I'm going to show:
A) Oil company profits per gallon vs. average combined taxes per gallon
B) Oil company volume of business vs. another industry's volume of business
C) Oil company profits per dollar vs. another industry's profits per dollar
